Was asked this by a student today . Said no. But is there hard evidence on this?

Well look.at the murder rates in states that have the death penalty as opposed to.those which dont would be the first thing to check.

Off the top of my head, I suspect that being caught and (correctly) tried would be a bigger deterrent.

Nope. It hasn't stopped the most terrible crimes still being committed. There's always gonna be psychopaths. Capital punishment should be scrapped, you can't take it back when you get it wrong

What drives someone to murder ,emotion is in some case jealously anger.etc, psychopaths , money and others I would assume

Emotion and psychopaths there would no thought of any repercussions before the murder, so not an effective deterrent

To contemplate murdering someone for money, In this case I think it would be deterrent

Many are just stupid or do it in the heat of the moment or hate a certain kind of people. There are loads of reasons people do this. Thank christ most of us never are part if that circumstance.

Re: Is capital punishment an effective deterrent to murder in the usa
People who commit crime focus on how they are going to get away with it, not what will happen if they're caught.

Deterrent works on the normals.....so therefore the risk of imprisonment is sufficient.

Son of Sam, are you a teacher? If so, I'd like to be the first to say:

"Yeah, I always thought he was the sort that shouldn't be allowed near kids"
